Advent is the season of getting ready for Christmas. It covers the four Sundays before December 25, and in 2026 it begins on Sunday, November 29. These advent prayers are written for each of those Sundays, for lighting a wreath with your family, and for the quiet days in between when you are simply waiting on God.

You do not need a church background or a fancy wreath. Read one aloud at dinner, pray one alone in the morning, or share a short line in your family WhatsApp group. The goal is simply to make room for Jesus before the Christmas rush.

“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light…” — Isaiah 9:2 (KJV)

What Is Advent?

The word Advent means “coming.” For four weeks, Christians remember how God’s people waited for the promised Savior, and we look forward to the day Christ will come again. In 2026 the Sundays of Advent are November 29, December 6, December 13 and December 20, and Christmas Day is Friday, December 25.

Many homes and churches use an Advent wreath: a circle of evergreen with four candles, one more lit each Sunday. The candles are commonly themed hope, peace, joy and love, but traditions vary. Some name them the Prophecy, Bethlehem, Shepherds and Angels candles. Many use three purple candles and one pink, and some add a white Christ candle in the center for Christmas. The prayers below use hope, peace, joy and love.

A Short Advent Prayer

Lord Jesus, as we wait for Christmas, slow us down and turn our hearts toward You. Light up the dark places in our lives with Your hope. Help us make room for You this season, not just in our homes but in our hearts. Amen.

Advent Prayers for the Four Sundays

These advent prayers match the wreath candles. Pray each on its Sunday or any day that week.

1. Prayer for the First Sunday of Advent: Hope (November 29)

Faithful God, today we light the first candle, the candle of hope. Your people waited many long years for the Savior You promised, and You did not forget them. When the world felt dark, You sent a great light. Some of us come into this season tired and unsure. Remind us that our hope is not in how well December goes, but in You. Let this small flame stand for a bigger truth: You keep Your word. Teach us to wait with expectation this week, trusting that You are near. Amen.

2. Prayer for the Second Sunday of Advent: Peace (December 6)

Prince of Peace, we light the second candle and ask You to quiet our hearts. John the Baptist called people to prepare the way for You, and we want to do the same. Clear out the clutter in us: the worry, the hurry, the old arguments we keep replaying. Bring peace into our homes, especially where there is tension between family members. Make us people who make peace, not people who keep score. As this candle burns, let Your calm settle over our minds this week. Amen.

3. Prayer for the Third Sunday of Advent: Joy (December 13)

Lord of all joy, we light the third candle today. The shepherds were ordinary men doing ordinary work when the angel brought them good tidings of great joy. Thank You that Your joy is for ordinary people like us too. Lift the heaviness some of us carry. Give us joy that does not depend on gifts, plans or perfect days, but on knowing that You came for us. Help us share that joy with someone who needs it this week, through a kind word, a visit, or a simple meal. Amen.

4. Prayer for the Fourth Sunday of Advent: Love (December 20)

Loving Father, we light the fourth candle, the candle of love. You loved the world so much that You gave Your only Son, born as a baby in little Bethlehem. That love is the reason for this whole season. Fill our hearts with the same love as Christmas draws close. Help us be patient with our families, generous with our neighbors, and gentle with ourselves. Where love has grown cold, warm it again. Let everyone who walks into our home this week feel welcome and wanted. Amen.

Advent Prayers for Family and Daily Life

5. Family Advent Wreath Lighting Prayer

Dear God, we gather around this wreath as a family. The green branches remind us that Your love never ends. The candles remind us that Jesus is the Light of the World. As we light this flame together, bless each person here, young and old. Help us listen to Your Word and to each other. Forgive us for the times we were short-tempered or selfish this week. Make our home a place where Jesus is welcome, and keep us close to You and to one another. Amen.

6. A Daily Advent Prayer

Lord, this is another day of waiting for Christmas, and another day to walk with You. Before the to-do list takes over, I give You this morning. Show me one way to prepare my heart today, whether it is a quiet moment, a kind act, or saying sorry to someone. Keep me from being so busy with shopping and planning that I miss You. Let the light of Christ guide my words and choices. I want to be ready for You, today and every day. Amen.

7. Prayer for Waiting and Patience

God of every season, I am not good at waiting. I want answers now, healing now, change now. Advent reminds me that Your people waited for centuries, and You were working the whole time. Teach me to wait with trust instead of worry. When I feel stuck, help me believe You have not forgotten me. Give me patience with the people around me and with the slow parts of my own story. While I wait, let me grow closer to You. Amen.

8. Prayer for Those Who Find This Season Hard

Lord, for many people this time of year is painful. Some are missing someone who died. Some are lonely, sick, out of work, or far from home. Some carry sadness they cannot explain. Jesus, You came into a dark world, not a perfect one. Come close to everyone who is hurting this Advent. Give them one person who notices and cares. Let them know it is okay not to feel cheerful. Hold them gently and bring Your light into their darkness, one small step at a time. Amen.

If the season brings deep sadness or anxiety, talk to a pastor, counselor or doctor. If anyone is in danger, contact local emergency services or a crisis line right away. You may also find comfort in these prayers for fear and anxiety and this Christmas prayer for the grieving.

How to Do a Simple Family Advent Wreath at Home

  • Make the wreath. Set four candles in a circle on a plate or tray and add evergreen, pine cones or paper leaves. Put a white candle in the middle if you like.
  • Choose a time. Most families light the candles on Sunday evening at dinner, then relight them at dinner on other nights that week.
  • Light in order. One candle in week one, two in week two, three in week three, all four in week four. Light the center candle on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
  • Keep it to five minutes. Light the candles, read a short passage, pray the matching prayer above, and let each person share one thing they are hoping for. Then blow out the candles and eat.
  • Let children help. Older children can read the verse or light the candle with an adult watching.
  • Stay safe. Never leave candles burning unattended. Battery candles work well for homes with toddlers.

Short Bible Readings for Each Week

  • Week 1, Hope: Isaiah 9:2 and 9:6. Talk about how light shows up in the dark.
  • Week 2, Peace: Isaiah 40:3. Ask, “What can we clear out to make room for Jesus?”
  • Week 3, Joy: Luke 2:8–11, the shepherds and the angel’s good news.
  • Week 4, Love: Micah 5:2 and Isaiah 7:14. God planned Jesus’ coming long before He was born.
  • Christmas: Luke 2:1–7, the birth of Jesus.

If you miss a night, just pick up the next day. For more ideas on praying together, see this prayer for family.
