As December ends, many of us find ourselves thinking back over everything 2026 held. An end of year prayer is a simple way to bring all of it to God: the blessings, the losses, the mistakes, and the questions we still carry.

Below are original prayers for thanksgiving, for a hard year, for regrets, for loved ones we lost, for your family, for New Year’s Eve on Thursday, December 31, 2026, and for placing 2027 in God’s hands. You will also find five simple journal questions to help you look back with God.

“It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” — Lamentations 3:22–23 (KJV)

A Short End of Year Prayer

Faithful God, thank You for carrying me through every day of this year, the good and the hard. Forgive what I got wrong and heal what still hurts. I place the new year in Your hands and trust You to walk ahead of me. Amen.

End of Year Prayers of Thanksgiving and Honest Looking Back

Some want to celebrate this year; some just want it over. God welcomes both.

1. Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Year

Use this end of year prayer when you want to count your blessings one by one.

Lord, You crowned this year with Your goodness. Thank You for the meals on my table, the roof over my head, and the people who loved me through it all. Thank You for answered prayers I forgot to thank You for, and for dangers You kept from me that I never saw. Everything good this year came from Your hand. Keep my heart grateful, not only tonight but all through the year to come. Amen.

2. Prayer After a Hard Year

Father, this year was hard. Some days I did not know how I would keep going, and yet here I am. I do not understand everything that happened, but I know You stayed with me. Thank You that Your mercies were new every morning, even on mornings I could barely get up. Hold the hurts I still carry and give me rest. Help me not to fear that next year will be the same. Remind me that You make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Amen.

If this year left you struggling with your mental health, please talk to a doctor or counselor too. If anyone is in danger, contact local emergency services or a crisis line right away.

3. Prayer for Letting Go of Regrets and Asking Forgiveness

Merciful God, I bring You the things I wish I could undo this year: the harsh words, the selfish choices, and the good I failed to do. I confess them honestly. Thank You that when I confess my sins, You are faithful and just to forgive me. Help me receive that forgiveness instead of punishing myself again and again. Show me where I need to make things right with someone. Then help me forget what lies behind and press forward, without dragging this year’s shame into the next. Amen.

4. Prayer for Unanswered Prayers

Lord, You know the prayers I prayed this year that still have no answer: the job that did not come, the healing I am still waiting for, the person who has not come home. I am disappointed, and sometimes I wonder if You heard me. Help me trust that You are good even when Your answer is “not yet.” Keep me from giving up on prayer. Give me patience to wait and courage to keep asking. I lay these requests at Your feet once more. Amen.

End of Year Prayers for Loved Ones and Family

For many families, the last week of December makes an empty chair feel even emptier. If your grief is heavy, you may also find comfort in our Christmas prayer for the grieving and our prayer for a grieving family.

5. Prayer for Those We Lost This Year

God of all comfort, this year we said goodbye to people we love. You know each name, and You know how much we miss them. Thank You for the years we had together, for their laughter, their stories, and the way they made us better. When the clock strikes midnight and the world celebrates, be close to those of us who feel the loss most. Help us grieve with hope, trusting You with the ones we love. Amen.

6. Family End of Year Prayer

Pray this end of year prayer together at the dinner table during the last week of December.

Heavenly Father, thank You for our family and for bringing us through this year together. Thank You for every birthday, every meal, and every ordinary day we shared. Forgive us for the times we were short with each other or too busy to listen. Heal any hurts between us and help us begin the new year with kind hearts. Watch over each of us, near and far. Let our home be a place of peace, laughter, and faith in the year ahead. Amen.

Prayers for New Year’s Eve and the Year Ahead

Many churches hold a watch-night service on New Year’s Eve, praying the old year out and the new year in.

7. New Year’s Eve Watch-Night Prayer

Lord, as the final hours of 2026 pass, I want to keep watch with You. Before the countdown and the noise, I stop to say thank You. You have helped me this far. Forgive me for the year’s failures and receive my gratitude for its blessings. As midnight comes, I give You the first moments of 2027. Let my first word be praise and my first desire be You. Whatever this new year holds, I want to meet it holding Your hand. Amen.

8. Prayer for a Church End-of-Year Service

This end of year prayer is written for a pastor or leader to pray aloud at a closing service.

Gracious God, we gather as Your church at the end of this year to give You thanks. You have been faithful to this congregation through every season. Thank You for lives changed, needs met, and friendships formed. We remember before You the members we lost and the families still grieving. Forgive us where we have been cold or divided, and renew our love for You and one another. As we enter 2027, fill this house with Your presence and send us out to serve our neighbors. Amen.

9. Prayer Committing 2027 to God

Lord Jesus, You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. I do not know what 2027 will bring, but I know You. So I commit my way to You: my plans, my work, my health, my money, my family, and my future. Where I need to grow, grow me. Where I need to rest, give me rest. Teach me to number my days so I live them wisely. Let this coming year be about Your will, not just my wishes. Amen.

A Simple Year-End Reflection With God

An end of year prayer goes deeper when you look back first. Take 20 to 30 minutes between Christmas and New Year’s Day with a notebook and your Bible, and answer these five questions with God. Our daily prayer journal prompts can help you keep the habit going in 2027.

  • Where did I see God this year? Write down specific moments: a provision, a protection, a verse that came at the right time.
  • What am I thankful for? List at least ten things, big and small, then read the list aloud to God as a prayer of thanks.
  • What do I need to forgive or release? Name the grudges, regrets, and disappointments you are still holding. Pray over each one and hand it to God.
  • What did I learn? Ask what God showed you about Himself, about yourself, and about other people. Write one or two lessons to carry forward.
  • What do I ask for in 2027? Write three to five honest requests. Keep the page and read it again next December to see how God answered.

FAQs About End of Year Prayer

What should I say in an end of year prayer?

A simple pattern is to thank God for the year’s blessings, confess what went wrong, release regrets and hurts, pray for others, and ask Him to guide you in the new year.

When should I pray an end of year prayer?

Many people pray on New Year’s Eve, Thursday, December 31, 2026, at a church watch-night service or at home before midnight. Others pray on New Year’s Day, Friday, January 1, 2027.

How do I pray if this year was really painful?

Tell God the truth; you do not have to pretend. Bring Him your pain, ask for comfort, and look for one small mercy to thank Him for. If you are struggling deeply, reach out to a pastor, a trusted friend, or a counselor as well.

A Final End of Year Prayer

Lord God, the year is almost over, and I come to You with an open heart. Thank You for being faithful every single day, for the joy You gave and the strength You supplied when joy was hard to find. I release my regrets, my grudges, and my fears into Your hands. Bless my family, my church, and my friends as we step into 2027. Do a new thing in us, Lord, and let every day of the coming year bring glory to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🙏
