In December 1531, on a cold hill called Tepeyac just outside what is now Mexico City, a poor Indigenous man named Juan Diego met a young woman who spoke to him with the tenderness of a mother. Nearly five hundred years later, millions still turn to her with an our lady of guadalupe prayer when they feel afraid, far from home, or worried about the people they love. Below you will find original prayers, a short history, and ways to celebrate her feast on Saturday, December 12, 2026.
Catholics do not worship Mary; worship belongs to God alone. We ask her to pray for us, the way you might ask your own mother to pray for you. Protestant readers are welcome too: you can pray directly to God and adapt these prayers as you wish.
“And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet…” — Revelation 12:1 (KJV)
A Short Our Lady of Guadalupe Prayer
Holy Mary of Guadalupe, you came to a humble man on a cold hillside and called him your little son. Look on me with that same kindness today. Bring my worries to your Son, Jesus, and help me trust Him with all my heart. Amen.

The Story Behind the Prayer: Tepeyac, 1531
Between December 9 and 12, 1531, Juan Diego, a recently baptized Indigenous man, saw a radiant woman on Tepeyac hill. She spoke to him in his own language, Nahuatl, and asked for a church to be built there. The bishop, Juan de Zumárraga, asked for a sign. Tradition says that when Juan Diego’s uncle fell gravely ill, the Lady comforted him with words remembered as, “Am I not here, I who am your mother?”
On the bare hilltop he found roses blooming in December. He carried them in his tilma, a simple cloak, to the bishop. When he opened it, the roses fell, and an image of the Virgin Mary appeared on the cloth. The tilma is kept today in her Basilica in Mexico City.
Juan Diego was canonized in 2002. Our Lady of Guadalupe is honored as patroness of the Americas, and many also look to her as patroness of the unborn, because the image shows her as an expectant mother.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Prayers for Protection and Family
1. Prayer for Protection
Our Lady of Guadalupe, you wrapped Juan Diego in your care when he was frightened and in a hurry. Wrap my family in that same care today. Pray for us when we leave home and when we return. Ask your Son, Jesus, to guard our bodies, our minds, and our hearts from every harm. When fear rises in me, remind me that I am not alone and that God sees every step I take. Amen.
2. Prayer for Mothers and the Unborn
Holy Mother of Guadalupe, your image shows you carrying a child beneath your heart. Pray for every mother who is expecting today, especially those who are tired, scared, or alone. Pray for the little ones growing in the womb, that they may be safe, loved, and welcomed. Ask Jesus to give mothers good doctors, kind helpers, and peace in their hearts. Help all of us to protect life gently and to support mothers with real help, not only words. Amen.
If you are pregnant, keep following your doctor or midwife’s advice, and see our prayer for pregnancy.
3. Prayer for My Family
Mother of Tepeyac, you sent Juan Diego home with good news about his uncle. I bring my whole family to you now. Pray for my spouse, my children, my parents, and every relative near and far. Where there is distance between us, ask Jesus to build bridges. Where there is hurt, ask Him to bring healing and honest words. Teach us to be patient at the dinner table and gentle in our homes. Help us forgive quickly and love without keeping score. Amen.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Prayers for Healing, Immigrants, and the Poor
4. Prayer for Healing
Our Lady of Guadalupe, tradition says your words brought comfort while Juan Diego’s uncle lay sick, and that he recovered. I come to you today for someone who is unwell. Please pray for them. Ask your Son, the Divine Healer, to touch their body and calm their fears. Give wisdom to their doctors and strength to their caregivers. If healing comes slowly, help us stay hopeful through the waiting. I leave the outcome in God’s good hands. Amen.

5. Prayer for Immigrants and Families Far From Home
Holy Mary of Guadalupe, you spoke to Juan Diego in his own language and made him feel at home. Pray for everyone who lives far from the land where they were born. Pray for workers who send money home and children who miss their grandparents. Comfort those who feel like strangers. Help neighbors welcome them with kindness and respect. Ask Jesus to keep families united in love, even when miles separate them, and to bring them together again in His time. Amen.
6. Prayer for the Poor
Mother of the humble, you chose a poor man to carry your message, not a rich or powerful one. Pray for all who are poor today. Pray for the hungry, the homeless, and those who cannot pay rent. Ask Jesus to open the hearts of people who have more than they need. Show me one person I can help this week, and give me the courage to actually do it. May no one feel forgotten by God or by us. Amen.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Novena and Feast Day Prayers
7. Prayer for Mexico and the Americas
Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas, we pray for every nation from Canada to Chile. Pray for Mexico, the land where you first appeared, and for all its people. Ask your Son to bring peace where there is violence and honesty where there is corruption. Pray for leaders, that they may serve with fairness, and for young people seeking a good future. Unite the peoples of these lands in faith, respect, and true brotherhood. Amen.
8. Family Novena Prayer (December 3–11)
A novena is nine days of prayer. Pray this our lady of guadalupe prayer together each evening from December 3 to 11, adding one Hail Mary for each person at home.
Holy Mother of Guadalupe, our family gathers again tonight to ask for your prayers. We bring you our worries, our hopes, and the people we love. Ask Jesus to bless our home and keep us close to Him. Help us prepare our hearts for your feast and for Christmas. As the roses bloomed in December, let something new and good bloom in our family this year. Amen.
9. Feast Day Prayer (December 12)
Our Lady of Guadalupe, today we celebrate your feast with joy. Thank you for coming to Tepeyac and showing the world that God loves the lowly and the forgotten. Thank you for the roses in winter and the image on the tilma that still draws people to your Son. On this special day, pray for our family, our parish, and our countries. Help us carry your message of hope wherever we go, as Juan Diego did. Amen.
How Families Celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
In 2026 the feast falls on a Saturday, so more families can join in. Here are simple ways to honor her:
- Sing Las Mañanitas at dawn. Many Mexican and Mexican American parishes gather before sunrise to sing Las Mañanitas, a traditional greeting song, to the Virgin. Check your parish bulletin for times.
- Bring roses. Roses recall the flowers Juan Diego found in December. Bring a bouquet to church or place one rose by her image at home.
- Go to Mass. If you cannot attend, read the day’s Gospel and pray a decade of the Rosary. See how to pray the Rosary.
- Make a simple home altar. Place a clean cloth, her picture, a candle, and a few roses on a small table. Let children help, and gather there each night of the novena.
- Do one act of mercy. Donate to a food bank, visit a lonely neighbor, or call a relative far away. This turns your our lady of guadalupe prayer into action.
A gentle word: some online messages say a prayer “must be shared” or “never fails.” Prayer is not a chain letter. God hears you either way, so pray with trust and leave the answer to Him.
