Few words in the Bible have been spoken over more people than may the Lord bless you and keep you. Pastors say them at the end of Sunday services. Parents whisper them over sleeping babies. Friends write them in cards. They come from the Priestly Blessing, also called the Aaronic Blessing, in Numbers 6:24–26.
Below you will learn what it means line by line and where it came from. Then you will find original blessings for bedtime, weddings, sickness and goodbyes, plus simple ways to bless your family.
“The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.” — Numbers 6:24–26 (KJV)
Where Does “May the Lord Bless You and Keep You” Come From?
While Israel was camped in the wilderness after leaving Egypt, God told Moses to pass these words on to Aaron, the high priest, and his sons: “On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel” (Numbers 6:23). The priests did not invent the blessing. God gave it as the words He wanted spoken over His people.

Verse 27 explains what happens next: “And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.” The priests spoke, but God promised to do the blessing. That is still true. When we say “may the Lord bless you and keep you,” we are not handing out our own power. We are asking God to do what He loves to do.
“The LORD bless thee, and keep thee”
To bless means God’s goodness poured into a life: provision, strength and joy. To keep means to guard and watch over, like a shepherd with his sheep. This line asks God both to give good things and to protect them.
“The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee”
A shining face is a picture of delight, like a parent’s face lighting up when a child walks into the room. To be gracious means to show kindness we did not earn. This line asks God to look on us with warmth and treat us with mercy.
“The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace”
Countenance means face. To lift up one’s face toward someone is to give them full attention. The blessing ends with peace, the Hebrew word shalom. Shalom is more than calm feelings. It means wholeness: peace with God, peace in the heart and well-being in daily life. Our prayer for peace builds on this idea.
The Ketef Hinnom Silver Scrolls
In 1979, archaeologist Gabriel Barkay was excavating burial caves at Ketef Hinnom, just outside the Old City of Jerusalem. His team found two tiny rolled-up silver amulets. When carefully unrolled and studied, they were found to contain a form of this blessing, close to the wording of Numbers 6:24–26.
Most scholars date them to about the late 7th or early 6th century BC, before the Babylonian exile. That makes them among the oldest known pieces of biblical text.
How the Blessing Is Used Today
Many churches use the Priestly Blessing as the benediction at the end of a service. It is also spoken at weddings, baptisms, graduations and funerals. In 2020 a worship song called “The Blessing” made these words familiar to a new generation.

How to Speak a Blessing Over Your Family
Jesus Himself blessed little children: “And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them” (Mark 10:16).
- Use a gentle touch. Place a hand on a shoulder or the top of the head, or hold their hand. Touch says, “I am here with you.”
- Say their name. “The Lord bless you, Sarah” feels far more personal than a general blessing.
- Look them in the eye. The blessing speaks of God’s face shining on us. Let your own face show warmth.
- Make it daily. Bedtime and the morning school run are natural moments. A twenty-second blessing is easier to keep than a long prayer you skip. Our prayer before bed page has more ideas.
- Bless adults too. Bless your spouse before work, an elderly parent on a visit, or a teenager before an exam. Many remember it fondly later.
