St. Joseph says not a single word in the Gospels, yet he protected Mary, raised Jesus, worked with his hands, and obeyed God when the plan made no sense. That is why so many people turn to him with a prayer to St Joseph when they need work, when their family feels fragile, or when someone they love is near the end of life.

Catholics honor Joseph as the husband of Mary and the foster father of Jesus (Matthew 1–2). His main feast is the Solemnity of St. Joseph on March 19, and the Church also celebrates St. Joseph the Worker on May 1. He is patron of workers, fathers, families, the universal Church, and a happy death. Below are original prayers, a simple devotion, and verses from his story.

“Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife.” — Matthew 1:24 (KJV)

A Short Prayer to St Joseph

St. Joseph, faithful guardian of Jesus and Mary, please pray for me today. Help me work honestly, love my family well, and trust God when I cannot see the whole road. Ask the Lord to give me your quiet courage. Amen.

Why Catholics Ask St. Joseph to Pray for Them

When Catholics say a prayer to St Joseph, they are not worshiping him. Worship belongs to God alone. They are asking Joseph to pray for them, the same way you might ask a trusted friend at church to pray for you. If you are a Protestant reader, you may prefer to pray directly to God, and you are welcome to adapt any of these prayers that way.

Joseph was a working man, called a carpenter in the Gospels, and a father who led his family to safety in Egypt. In 1870 Pope Pius IX named him Patron of the Universal Church, and in 1955 Pope Pius XII set May 1 as the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. Tradition says Joseph died with Jesus and Mary beside him, which is why he is called the patron of a happy death.

St. Joseph, you knew what it was to earn bread for your family with tired hands. Please pray for me as I look for work. Help me write honest applications, speak clearly in interviews, and not lose heart when I hear “no.” Ask God to open the right door, even if it is not the door I expected. While I wait, keep me from bitterness and help me use these days well. I place my need in God’s hands, trusting His timing. Amen.

2. Prayer for Help Selling a House or Finding a Home

Some families have a custom of burying a small St. Joseph statue in the yard when selling a house. This is a folk practice, not a requirement, and it is not magic.

St. Joseph, you looked for shelter in Bethlehem and found only a stable. You moved your family to Egypt and back again. Please pray for us as we deal with this house. Give us patience with buyers, agents, paperwork, and money worries. Help us price fairly and be honest about repairs. If we are searching for a new home, lead us to a place where our family can rest and grow. Calm our stress, and remind us that our true home is with God. Amen.

3. Prayer for Carpenters and Tradesmen

St. Joseph, carpenter of Nazareth, please pray for all who build, fix, wire, weld, plumb, and paint. Protect them from injury on ladders, roofs, and job sites. Give them steady hands, sharp eyes, and fair pay for their work. Help them take pride in doing the job right, even when no one is checking. Teach every worker that a well-built wall or a mended pipe can be offered to God. Bring them home safely to their families each night. Amen.

Help every dad lead by example, as you led quietly in Nazareth. Amen.

5. Prayer for Protection of the Family

St. Joseph, when Herod threatened your child, you rose in the night and took your family to safety. Please pray for my family now. Guard our home from danger, sickness, and division. Keep Christ at the center of our marriage. Amen.

7. Prayer for Obedience to God’s Plans

St. Joseph, God changed your plans again and again. You meant to quietly send Mary away, yet you took her as your wife. You meant to live in Bethlehem, yet you fled to Egypt. Please pray for me when my plans fall apart. Help me listen for God’s voice, even when it comes softly. Give me the courage to act on what is right without needing every answer first. Teach me to obey with love, not fear. Amen.

8. Prayer for a Good Death

This prayer to St Joseph may be prayed for yourself or a loved one near the end of life. See also our prayer for the dying.

St. Joseph, tradition says you died with Jesus and Mary at your side. Please pray for me, and for all who are dying today. When my last hour comes, let me not be afraid. Help me make peace with God and with the people I love. Let my family be near, and let them find comfort. Ask Jesus to forgive my sins and receive me with mercy. Until that day, help me live each day ready to meet Him. Amen.

How to Keep a Simple St. Joseph Devotion

You do not need special books or a perfect routine.

  • Pray on Wednesdays. Wednesday is traditionally dedicated to St. Joseph. Say one prayer to St Joseph each Wednesday morning, or before work.
  • Try a 9-day novena. Pray the same short prayer for nine days in a row. Many people begin on March 10 or 11 so it ends near his feast on March 19. Any nine days are fine.
  • Keep a 30-day devotion. Some families pray to St. Joseph for 30 days before his March feast, or during a hard season. Pick one prayer and pray it daily. Missing a day is not a failure; just pick up again.
  • Write it down. Keep a short list of what you are asking for and note what happens. Our daily prayer journal prompts can help.
  • Add a work offering. Before starting your shift, say, “St. Joseph, pray for me as I work today.”

A gentle note: you may see social posts saying a St. Joseph prayer “never fails” or must be shared to work. That is not Church teaching. God hears every sincere prayer, and the answer is always in His hands, not ours.
