For more than a century, Catholics around the world have turned to the St Michael prayer when they feel the need for spiritual protection. It is short and easy to remember. Many people learned it as children, kneeling in church after Mass, and still say it today.

Below you will find the traditional prayer of Pope Leo XIII, a look at St. Michael in the Bible, and new prayers for family, home, those in uniform, and anyone facing fear. Catholics ask St. Michael and the saints to pray for them, the way we ask a friend to pray for us; worship belongs to God alone. If you are a Protestant reader, you can pray directly to God and adapt any of these prayers in that way.

“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon…” — Revelation 12:7 (KJV)

A Short St Michael Prayer

St. Michael the Archangel, pray for me and for those I love today. Ask the Lord to guard us from every evil and to keep our hearts close to Him. Help us stand firm when we are tempted and calm when we are afraid. Amen.

Who Is St. Michael the Archangel?

Michael is one of only a few angels named in Scripture. His name means “Who is like God?” He points away from himself and toward God.

  • In the Book of Daniel, Michael is called “one of the chief princes” who came to help (Daniel 10:13), and “the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people” (Daniel 12:1). He protects God’s people in times of trouble.
  • In the Letter of Jude, he is called “Michael the archangel.” When he disputed with the devil, he did not rely on his own power but said, “The Lord rebuke thee” (Jude 1:9). The victory belongs to God.
  • In the Book of Revelation, Michael and his angels fight against the dragon in heaven (Revelation 12:7).

The Church celebrates the feast of Sts. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels, on September 29. St. Michael is honored as patron of police officers, soldiers, and others in dangerous work, because he defends God’s people from harm.

The Traditional St Michael Prayer of Pope Leo XIII

Pope Leo XIII composed this prayer in 1886. For decades it was said by priest and people at the end of Low Mass. That custom ended in the 1960s, but many parishes have brought it back. Here is the common English version.

Traditional prayer:

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

The words “May God rebuke him” echo Jude 1:9. We do not fight evil in our own strength; we ask God to act.

St Michael Prayers for Family and Home

1. Prayer for the Protection of My Family

St. Michael the Archangel, I place my family under your care today. Pray for my spouse, my children, my parents, and everyone who shares my name and my table. Ask the Lord to guard us from accidents, from harmful people, and from the quiet temptations that pull hearts away from God. Where there is tension, ask Jesus to bring patience and kind words. Defend us, holy archangel, and lead us all safely home to the Father. Amen.

2. Prayer for the Protection of Our Home

Lord God, You are the true guardian of this house. I ask St. Michael the Archangel to pray for us and to stand watch at our door. Keep this home free from anger that wounds, from secrets that divide, and from every evil influence. Let it be a place where people feel safe, where meals are shared with thanks, and where Your name is spoken with love. Make our home a small place of peace in a troubled world. Amen.

3. Prayer for a Child’s Protection

St. Michael, defender of the little ones, please pray for my child. I cannot be beside him or her every moment, but God sees every step. Ask the Lord to protect my child at school, on the road, online, and with friends. Guard my child’s body from harm and heart from lies. Give my child courage to say no to what is wrong and to stay close to Jesus. Together with my child’s guardian angel, keep watch over this precious life that God has trusted to me. Amen.

4. Night Prayer to St. Michael

Lord Jesus, the day is over and I give it back to You. Forgive what I did wrong and thank You for every grace. St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us through this night. Guard our sleep, our home, and our minds from fear and dark thoughts. If anyone in this house wakes up troubled, let them feel Your peace. Let us rest in Your care and rise in the morning ready to serve You. Amen.

St Michael Prayers for Courage and Spiritual Protection

5. Prayer for Police, Military, and First Responders

St. Michael the Archangel, patron of those who protect others, pray for police officers, soldiers, firefighters, paramedics, and all who run toward danger. Ask God to guard their bodies and keep their judgment clear. Help them use their strength with fairness, mercy, and self-control. Bring them home safely to the people who love them, and comfort the families who wait and worry. For those who have died in service, ask for His mercy and eternal rest. Amen.

6. Prayer Against Fear

Heavenly Father, my heart feels heavy and afraid. I do not want fear to rule my thoughts. St. Michael, you stood firm because you trusted God completely; please pray that I may trust Him too. Give me the calm to take the next small step and the humility to ask for help from others. Remind me that You have not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. I place my fears in Your hands. Amen.

7. Prayer in Times of Spiritual Struggle

Lord Jesus, You have already won the victory over sin and death. When I feel tempted, confused, or spiritually heavy, I turn to You first. St. Michael the Archangel, defend me in this battle. Pray that I may resist what is evil, confess my sins honestly, and stay close to the sacraments. Fill my mind with what is true and good. Lead me to wise people who can help me, and let me never forget that I belong to You. Amen.

8. Prayer for Courage

St. Michael, your name asks, “Who is like God?” Help me remember that no problem, no person, and no fear is greater than the Lord. Pray that I may have courage today: courage to tell the truth, to stand up for someone who is treated unfairly, to make a hard decision, and to do the right thing when it costs me something. When my knees shake, let my faith hold steady. I do not ask to be fearless, only to be faithful. Amen.

How and When to Pray the St Michael Prayer

You do not need a special place or formula. A sincere heart is enough.

  • After Mass: Many parishes now say the traditional St Michael prayer together after Mass. If yours does not, you can say it quietly in your pew before you leave.
  • In the morning: Say it before you check your phone, along with our morning prayers.
  • Before travel: Say it as you buckle your seatbelt or before takeoff, along with a prayer for safe travel.
  • As a family: Say it together at dinner or bedtime. Let children take turns leading.
  • At night: Add it to your bedtime routine with a night prayer for protection.

A few honest words of care:

  • Stay calm and sober. The St Michael prayer is a prayer of trust, not a ritual. Do not attempt special rites at home. For a serious spiritual concern, speak with a priest.
  • Get help when needed. Fear, panic, or deep sadness can be signs of a health condition. Please talk to a doctor; it is not a lack of faith. If anyone is in danger, contact local emergency services right away. Our page on prayers for fear and anxiety may also help.
  • No chain rules. You may see posts saying the prayer “must be shared” to work. God hears a prayer said once, quietly, with love.
