Maybe someone you love is sick, a child has drifted away, or your own heart is simply tired. For centuries, Catholics in hard moments have turned to the Mother of Jesus with a prayer to Mother Mary, asking her to carry their needs to her Son.

Below you will find who Mary is, why Catholics ask her prayers, two traditional prayers, eight original prayers for real needs, and simple ways to honor her.

“Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.” — Luke 1:28 (KJV)

A Short Prayer to Mother Mary

Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, you know what it is to worry, to wait, and to trust. Please pray for me today and bring my needs to your Son. Help me to say yes to God the way you did. Amen.

Who Is Mary to Catholics?

Mary is the young woman of Nazareth whom God chose to be the mother of Jesus. In Luke 1, the angel Gabriel greets her as “highly favoured,” and Mary answers with simple trust: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38). Her yes made room for the Savior to enter the world.

Mary also stood at the cross, where Jesus told the beloved disciple, “Behold thy mother!” (John 19:27). Catholics read this as Jesus giving His mother to all His followers.

Why Catholics Ask Mary to Pray for Them

At the wedding in Cana (John 2), the wine ran out. Mary noticed, brought the problem to Jesus, and told the servants, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it” (John 2:5). Jesus then worked His first miracle.

Mary notices our needs, takes them to Jesus, and points us back to Him. A prayer to Mother Mary is not worship, which belongs to God alone. Catholics ask Mary to pray for them, as you might ask your own mother to pray for you.

Protestant readers may prefer to pray directly to God, and can adapt these prayers by addressing them to the Lord.

Traditional Prayers to Mary

The Hail Mary (traditional prayer)

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

The first half echoes Luke 1:28 and 1:42. It is the main prayer of the Rosary; see how to pray the Rosary.

The Memorare (traditional prayer)

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

The Memorare expresses trust, not a guarantee. God answers in His own way and time.

Prayers to Mother Mary for Protection and Healing

1. Prayer to Mother Mary for Protection

Mother Mary, you kept the child Jesus safe on the road to Egypt, in a strange land, far from home. Please pray for me and for everyone I love. Ask your Son to guard us from harm, from evil, and from fear. Watch over our homes, our travels, and our nights. When danger is near, help me stay calm and make wise choices. Wrap us in your care and lead us always closer to Jesus, our true shelter. Amen.

For more, pray the St. Michael prayer.

2. Prayer to Mother Mary for Healing

Holy Mary, you stood by your Son in His suffering, so you understand pain. I bring you [name], who is sick and hurting. Please pray that Jesus, the Divine Healer, will touch their body, mind, and spirit. Give the doctors and nurses wisdom and gentle hands. Give the family patience and strength for the long days. If healing is slow, keep our hope alive. Help us trust that God has not forgotten us, whatever comes. Amen.

Keep following your doctor’s advice while you pray.

3. Prayer for Peace of Mind

Mother Mary, you “kept all these things, and pondered them” in your heart, even when you did not understand. My mind is racing tonight. I am worried about things I cannot control. Please pray for me. Ask Jesus to quiet my thoughts and calm my body. Help me give each worry to God one at a time. Teach me to rest the way a child rests in a mother’s arms. Let His peace guard my heart until morning. Amen.

If anxiety is heavy or constant, please talk to a doctor or counselor too.

4. Prayer for a Mother’s Heart

Mary, Mother of Jesus, you raised your Son with love, patience, and quiet strength. I ask for a heart like yours. On the days I am tired, give me gentleness. On the days I am afraid, give me courage. Help me listen more and rush less. Let my children feel loved in my home, even when I make mistakes. Pray that I may raise them to know Jesus and to be kind. Amen.

5. Prayer for My Family

Holy Mother, you lived in a simple home in Nazareth with Joseph and Jesus. Please pray for my family. Where there is tension, ask for peace. Where there is hurt, ask for forgiveness. Help us to eat together, pray together, and speak kindly. Protect our children and our elders. Bless our work and our rest. Make our home a small place where God is welcome. Amen.

You might also pray a prayer to St. Joseph, who guarded the Holy Family. If anyone in your home is unsafe, please contact local emergency services.

6. Prayer During a Difficult Pregnancy

Mother Mary, you carried Jesus under your heart and traveled to Bethlehem when your time was near. I am scared for this pregnancy and for this little one. Please pray for us. Ask Jesus to protect my baby and keep my body strong. Give my doctors and midwife clear wisdom. Calm my fears when the news is hard to hear. Whatever happens, help me know I am not alone. Amen.

Keep following your doctor or midwife’s advice.

7. Prayer for a Child Far From God

Holy Mary, you searched three days for the boy Jesus in Jerusalem, so you know the ache of a lost child. My child has drifted far from God. I miss the faith we once shared. Please pray for them. Ask Jesus to follow them wherever they go and to open their heart again. Keep me from nagging or giving up. Help me love them well and wait with hope. Amen.

A Prayer to Mother Mary to Begin the Day

8. Prayer of Consecration of the Day

Mother Mary, I give you this new day. I offer Jesus, through your hands, every thought, word, and task ahead of me. Take my plans and my worries. Take my work, my meals, my conversations, and my rest. Where I fall short, pray for me. Help me say yes to God in small things, as you did. Keep me close to your Son until evening comes. Amen.

Simple Ways to Honor Mary

Small, steady habits work best.

  • Pray the Rosary. Even one decade a day (one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, one Glory Be) is a good start, in the car or before bed.
  • Pray the Angelus at noon. This short prayer remembers the angel’s message to Mary. It is traditionally prayed at 6 a.m., noon, and 6 p.m. A noon phone reminder helps.
  • Keep the Immaculate Conception on December 8. This feast celebrates that Mary was kept free from original sin from the first moment of her own life. It is about Mary’s conception, not Jesus’ birth.
  • Celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12. In 1531, Catholics believe, Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego near Mexico City. Pray our Our Lady of Guadalupe prayer that day.
  • Pray for others by name. Offer one Hail Mary for each person on your list.
  • Ignore chain messages. Posts saying a prayer “must be shared 10 times” to work are not Catholic teaching. God hears a sincere prayer whether you share it or not.

A Final Prayer to Mother Mary

Mother Mary, thank you for your yes to God. Thank you for staying with Jesus all the way to the cross, and for staying with us now. I place in your care everything I carry: my family, my fears, my hopes, and the people I love who are hurting. Pray for me, that I may trust your Son more each day. When I do not know what to do, remind me of your words at Cana: whatever He tells me, let me do it. Lead me safely home to Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🙏
